Our key stage 3 students take part in Global Awareness lessons. These lessons are designed to support young people as they grow, helping them develop the knowledge, confidence and character needed for adult life.
Global Awareness encourages students to understand themselves, build positive relationships and develop respect for the diverse world around them. The curriculum explores wellbeing, healthy relationships, diversity, equality, personal safety and responsible decision‑making. It also supports young people in developing the skills they need for future learning and employment.
Students gain a deeper understanding of the issues that shape modern society through the topics that we cover, which are:
- Physical and emotional wellbeing,
- Relationships and sex education,
- Diversity and equality,
- Staying safe both on and offline,
- Careers and economic wellbeing,
- Human rights and liberty
These themes promote empathy, resilience and responsible citizenship.
At our academy, Global awareness is delivered through a timetabled lesson that encourage discussion, critical thinking and the ability to question and challenge opinions. This helps students build the foundations they need to thrive both in school and in the wider world.
Key stage 4 Global Awareness
Global and Religious Education builds on the knowledge and understanding developed through Global Awareness in earlier years. The course encourages students to explore complex social, ethical and cultural issues while developing respect for different beliefs, values and viewpoints. Through discussion, reflection and critical thinking, students are supported to express their ideas confidently and engage thoughtfully with the perspectives of others.
The curriculum focuses on three key topics: Extremism and Cults, Crime and Punishment, and Relationships. These units help students understand how beliefs, laws and social expectations influence life in modern Britain while promoting the values of Tuxford Academy.
Extremism and Cults explores how stereotypes about extremists can develop and challenges students to think critically about these assumptions. Students learn about different types of cults and examine the common characteristics and warning signs that may indicate when a group or leader is exerting harmful influence.
Crime and Punishment introduces students to important legal and social questions, including what counts as a crime, how young people are treated by the law, and the different forms of punishment used in society. Students also learn about the support available for victims of crime and consider issues of justice, fairness and responsibility.
Relationships includes the statutory Relationships and Sex Education curriculum, helping students develop an understanding of healthy relationships, consent, respect and personal wellbeing.
Throughout the course, students are supported in a safe and respectful environment where they can explore challenging issues, develop empathy and build the confidence to engage with the diverse views they will encounter in wider society. The course helps prepare students to understand the rights, responsibilities and laws that shape life in modern Britain.
