Young carers at Tuxford Academy

A young carer is a person under the age of 18 who helps to care for a family member affected by a disability, long-term illness, mental health condition, or substance misuse.

At  Tuxford Academy, we recognise the important responsibilities that some students undertake at home and are committed to ensuring that these responsibilities do not prevent them from achieving success in school. We strive to support the educational progress, attendance, wellbeing, and personal development of all young carers within our academy community.

Charlotte Sunley is the academy’s Young Carers Lead. Alongside her role as Child Looked After Lead, Mrs Sunley is passionate about identifying young carers and ensuring they receive the support they need to thrive both academically and personally.

Mrs Sunley coordinates a range of support for young carers, helping them overcome challenges that may impact their education and school experience. She works closely with external organisations to provide opportunities for students to meet other young carers, access additional support services, and participate in enriching activities beyond the classroom.

‘We understand the unique challenges that young carers can face and are committed to providing the support they need both inside and outside the classroom. Mrs Sunley’s dedication to championing our young carers makes a real difference to students and their families. It is a privilege to work alongside her and support the valuable work she leads across the academy.’ Anna Leathem-Pugh, Vice Principal
