Students at Tuxford Academy are embracing an exciting new sporting opportunity this term as year 10 and 11 pupils take part in a newly introduced padel club, giving them the chance to experience one of the world’s fastest-growing sports.

Developed in partnership with local business The Padel Club, the initiative helps students explore new sporting opportunities while strengthening links between the academy and the local community. The partnership also reflects the academy’s desire to work closely with local businesses and organisations, helping students benefit from the fantastic opportunities available right on their doorstep.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, padel originated in Mexico in the late 1960s and has since grown into a global phenomenon, particularly across Spain and Europe. Played on an enclosed court that is smaller than a tennis court, padel combines elements of tennis and squash, with players able to use the surrounding walls as part of the game. Its straightforward rules, dynamic rallies and inclusive nature have helped drive its rapid rise in popularity, making it one of the fastest-growing sports in the world.

While traditional team sports remain a valuable part of school life, Tuxford Academy recognises the importance of exposing students to a diverse range of activities that they may not otherwise have the opportunity to try. Padel offers exactly that. Combining elements of tennis and squash, the sport is fast-paced, highly social and accessible for players of all abilities.

The introduction of the club reflects the dedication and forward-thinking approach of the academy’s PE staff, who are continually looking for new ways to engage students, build confidence and inspire healthy lifestyles beyond the school gates. Their commitment goes far beyond delivering PE lessons. They are passionate about helping young people find forms of exercise they genuinely enjoy, increasing the likelihood that they will remain active throughout adulthood.

By partnering with That Padel Club, students are not only learning a new sport but are also becoming more aware of the facilities available within their local community. The academy believes it is important for young people to understand that opportunities to stay active don’t end when the school day finishes. Local sports clubs and community venues play a vital role in supporting physical and mental wellbeing, and introducing students to these environments helps create stronger connections between school and community life.

Mr Thompson, avid padel enthusiast and PE teacher said, “Our aim is not just to develop sporting ability, but to help students discover activities they enjoy and can continue throughout their lives. Padel provides a fantastic opportunity for students to challenge themselves, learn new skills and step outside of their comfort zones.”

Beyond the physical benefits, students are developing a wide range of transferable skills through participation. As they learn the tactics and techniques of a new sport, they are also strengthening communication, teamwork, resilience and problem-solving abilities. Learning something completely unfamiliar encourages students to persevere, adapt and build confidence in their own capabilities.

The club is also helping students understand the value of being open to new experiences. By trying an emerging sport, pupils develop curiosity, adaptability and a growth mindset, qualities that are equally important in the classroom, future careers and everyday life.

Padel’s social nature means students are constantly working together, communicating and supporting one another. Whether celebrating a successful rally or learning from a difficult game, these experiences help build character and confidence while fostering a sense of belonging and enjoyment.

For many students, learning padel has become about more than sport. It has been an opportunity to connect with friends, support one another and experience the enjoyment that comes from personal improvement and shared achievement. For some, it may even spark a lifelong interest in a sport they had never previously encountered.

The academy hopes that experiences such as these will encourage students to remain active throughout their lives and discover passions that extend well beyond their school years. By introducing young people to modern and emerging sports, staff hope to demonstrate that staying active can take many forms and that there is a sport for everyone.

The partnership with That Padel Club also showcases the strength of collaboration between schools and local businesses. By working together, both organisations are helping to create meaningful opportunities for young people while promoting the use of local facilities that encourage healthy habits, active lifestyles and community engagement.

As padel continues to grow in popularity across the UK, Tuxford Academy is proud to be giving its students the chance to be among the first to experience this exciting sport locally, demonstrating once again its commitment to providing enriching opportunities that help every young person thrive.

At Tuxford Academy, sport is about more than competition. It’s about confidence, character, community and creating opportunities for students to discover what they are capable of achieving.
