Year 9 geography students enjoyed a successful field trip to Grinds Brook near Edale last Thursday 25 and Friday 26 June. The trip enabled students to put their classroom learning into practice in one of the Peak District’s most picturesque river environments.

Year 9 started with investigating how sediment changes along the course of a river before working in small groups to collect data from different points along Grinds Brook. They examined the size, shape and distribution of riverbed materials to better understand the processes that shape river landscapes over time.

The fieldwork gave students valuable hands-on experience of geographical enquiry, allowing them to apply key concepts learned in lessons while developing practical skills in data collection, observation and analysis.

The trip also coincided with exceptionally warm weather, with temperatures reaching record-breaking levels for June in parts of the UK. Fortunately, the riverside setting provided a welcome opportunity to stay cool while exploring the natural environment.

The experience will help students deepen their understanding of river processes and provide real-world examples to support their studies in geography throughout the coming year.
