Whether you are new to Tuxford Academy from an external secondary school or currently in year 11 with us, thinking about your further education options can be overwhelming. To help you weigh up your options, some of our students have answered your frequently asked questions to support you in making your decision as to whether our sixth form is the best choice for you.
Our community
Our sixth form is proud of its diversity, bringing together students who have decided to stay on at Tuxford Academy after year 11 as well as those joining from other schools. This mix creates a vibrant community where a wide range of subject interests, career ambitions, and personal passions are celebrated. We also value the different backgrounds, cultures, and experiences our students bring, which enriches classroom discussions and helps everyone develop a broader perspective of the world.
Our facilities
Our Post 16 Centre offers a dedicated space just for sixth form students, giving you the independence to learn and socialise in a setting designed for your needs, while still being part of the wider school community.
The centre includes modern study facilities for both quiet, focused work and collaborative group study, and it’s conveniently located near the Learning Resource Centre (library), providing easy access to additional resources and support.
Alongside the dedicated Post 16 Centre, our students benefit from outstanding specialist teaching facilities. From fully equipped science laboratories and professional-standard dance and drama studios to extensive sports facilities, you’ll have access to the resources you need to excel both academically and creatively. What makes our setting truly unique, though, is the abundance of outdoor green space — a rare find in most sixth forms — offering the perfect environment to relax, recharge, and enjoy student life beyond the classroom.
Our culture
It’s no surprise that students mention our pastoral support to be one of the reasons we are an attractive option for sixth form. We genuinely care for our students and it is something you can see and feel the moment you walk through our doors. Teachers and support staff take the time to get to know you as an individual, offering guidance not just with your studies, but with your wellbeing and future ambitions too. This nurturing approach creates a welcoming community and culture where everyone feels valued, supported, and inspired to achieve their best.
Our staff
Our senior leadership team plays a vital role in shaping the vision and direction of both the academy and the Post 16 Centre. Through their dedication and strategic guidance, they ensure that high standards are maintained and that our students have every opportunity to succeed.
Leadership here is highly visible — senior staff keep their doors open, welcome conversations, and foster a culture where everyone operates on one level. This atmosphere of mutual respect helps create a supportive and inclusive community. Their commitment has helped us build and sustain an excellent reputation within the local community — one that continues to make our Post 16 Centre the number one choice for students and families alike.
Putting you first
One of the things students value most about our sixth form is how approachable and supportive the staff are. Every teacher and member of the support team has your best interests at heart, taking the time to listen, guide, and encourage you. They are not only passionate about their subjects but also about helping you grow as a person. Acting as positive role models and trusted influencers, our staff inspire confidence, ambition, and resilience — ensuring you feel supported both inside and outside the classroom.
Learning is enjoyable
At our sixth form, teaching is treated as a craft. Lessons are carefully planned to be engaging, exciting, and thought-provoking, encouraging students to think deeply and challenge ideas. Collaboration and debate are welcomed, helping you develop confidence in expressing your views while learning from others. Our teachers are highly regarded by students not only for their expertise but also for their ability to make learning truly meaningful, inspiring and fun.
Do what you enjoy
We believe you achieve your best when you study subjects you genuinely enjoy. That’s why we encourage you to choose courses that match your interests, strengths, and future ambitions. When you’re passionate about what you’re learning, it’s easier to stay motivated, push yourself further, and get the most out of your sixth form experience. Our staff are always on hand to offer guidance and help you make choices that feel right for you.
Keep your future goals in mind
When selecting your sixth form subjects, it’s helpful to think about how they might support your future goals — whether that’s university, an apprenticeship, or a particular career path. But if you’re not sure what you want to do yet, that’s absolutely fine too. Many students are still exploring their options, and our staff are here to guide you in choosing a balanced mix of subjects that keep doors open while you discover what inspires you most.
Be prepared to work hard
Our sixth form is built on a culture of high expectations and academic ambition. Students are encouraged to push themselves, take pride in their work, and aim for the very best outcomes. Lessons are purposeful and challenging, with a clear focus on progress and achievement. This academically driven environment not only supports excellent results but also prepares you with the skills, discipline, and mindset needed for success in higher education and beyond.
Likewise, upon enrolling at ELA sixth form, you’ll be expected to take responsibility for your own learning. Whilst we will work with all our students to get them the best outcomes, we expect our students to be equally dedicated.
Show your personality
Your post 16 interview is a chance for us to get to know the real you — not just your grades. We want to hear about your interests, passions, and the qualities that make you different. It’s also an opportunity to share how you’d like to contribute to life at the Tuxford Academy, whether that’s through leadership, creativity, community involvement, or simply bringing a positive attitude. Showing your personality helps us understand how we can support you best and ensures you feel at home in our sixth form community.
Preparing you for the future
We give our students clear and comprehensive guidance on the full range of options available after sixth form — whether that’s university, apprenticeships, employment, or taking a gap year to travel and gain life experience.
To prepare you for the world of work, we have a semi-smart dress code that helps you think about how you present yourself, arrive ready to learn and work, and get into the habit of appearing professional and prepared for whatever comes next.
We also support students in building strong portfolios of work and knowledge to help them stand out — with dedicated help for applications, interview preparation, and developing a confident personal narrative.
Unifrog and UCAS
In sixth form, you’ll have dedicated time set aside to plan and prepare for your next steps. With the support of your tutor, you’ll use tools like Unifrog to explore university courses, apprenticeships, and career pathways, as well as receive structured guidance on the UCAS application process. Whether you’re researching degree options, drafting a personal statement, completing your UCAS application, or comparing different career routes, this dedicated time ensures you have the support and direction needed to make confident, informed decisions about your future.
Wellbeing matters
We believe that your happiness and wellbeing are key to your success. When you look after both your body and mind, you’re better equipped to focus, learn, and achieve your goals. That’s why we provide a range of support to help you manage stress, stay healthy, and maintain a positive balance between study and life.
